Key Takeaways:

  • The best AI data loss prevention (DLP) platform for enterprise is ORION Security if you want AI data controls inside a full DLP platform, with useful findings before a large policy program's in place.
  • An AI DLP platform stops sensitive data from reaching AI tools by watching prompts, uploads, and pastes, classifying the data, and applying monitor, warn, or block responses. The better ones also show where the data came from.
  • Every platform was assessed on the same six proof-of-concept tests: prompts and uploads, personal and approved accounts, data with no history, source-to-prompt lineage, controls by workflow, and false positives with who runs it.
  • Nightfall AI, Cyberhaven, MIND, and Forcepoint each cover AI data loss from a different starting point: SaaS and cloud detection, lineage, agent-run operations, and a policy-first suite.
  • Sources are each vendor's own documentation, G2, Gartner Peer Insights, and ORION Security's customer deployments, identified separately. The list has 5 platforms because the inclusion rules produced 5.
  • Choose ORION Security for AI controls inside one DLP model. Another platform fits when lineage depth, SaaS detection, agent-run operations, or an existing policy suite decides it.

Employees paste, upload, and prompt their way through AI tools every day, and the data they use belongs to the company. An AI DLP platform sits between the two. Here's what the category does, how the shortlist was built, what each platform documents, what reviewers say, and which paths to test before you choose.

What an AI DLP Platform Does

An AI DLP platform stops sensitive data from reaching AI tools by watching prompts, uploads, and pastes, classifying the data involved, and applying a response such as monitor, warn, or block. It adds the context a rule can't: where the data came from, who moved it, and which AI account received it.

The category goes by several names, including generative AI DLP and AI data leakage prevention. They're all the same job. A platform that does it well tells an approved enterprise account from a personal one, spots data it hasn't seen before, and gives the reviewer a reason with each finding. It shouldn't need a finished data catalog to do any of that.

How We Evaluated These AI DLP Platforms

We assessed each platform on connected coverage, classification as data moves, contextual detection, lineage and investigation, control depth, and operability. This comparison reviews documented capabilities and reported operating experience. We haven't run hands-on tests, so the six checks below are for your proof of concept.

The 6 Tests Used to Assess Each Platform

We haven't treated support as a yes or no. For each AI workflow, ask what the platform can see, detect, and classify, whether it connects the activity to where the data came from, and whether it can investigate, remediate after the event, or enforce in real time.

TestWhat to do in the proof of conceptWhat a good answer looks like
1. Prompts, pastes, and uploadsPaste and upload test data in a browser AI app and a desktop AI appEach path is recorded, warned, or blocked, or the gap is named
2. Personal and approved accountsUse the same AI app with a personal and a corporate account, and send the same test data to eachDifferent decisions for each account, with the reasoning shown
3. Data with no historySend a new file, a copied snippet, a screenshot, and a renamed copy into a promptEach is classified as it moves, with no prior scan
4. Source-to-prompt lineageDownload a file from a SaaS app, save it, rename it, and paste it into an AI tool; ask an analyst to trace itA connected account of who moved the data, where it started, and where the record stops
5. Controls by workflowTest warnings, justifications, blocks, and removal after the event on the paths you needClear real-time and post-event options for each path
6. False positives and who runs itHave one reviewer sort a week of AI-related findings and track the timeMost findings are ones the reviewer would act on, and the work fits a normal day

Where the Evidence Comes From

Vendor documentation is the primary source for capabilities, read on October 23, 2026, and performance statements on those pages remain vendor claims. Dated reviews on G2 and Gartner Peer Insights describe implementation and operating experience. We identify reviewers by name, role, and company size where those details are available.

ORION Security's customer figures are our own deployment evidence, identified separately. Individual reviews don't establish a platform-wide failure rate or verify features released after the review. Roadmap items aren't treated as current capabilities, and we've left them out.

Which Platforms Made the List, and Why There Are 5

Nightfall AI, Cyberhaven, MIND, and Forcepoint appeared repeatedly in the AI DLP recommendation and ranking pages we reviewed in October 2026, and each documents controls for data going into AI tools. ORION Security, our own platform, is included alongside them. Microsoft Purview and network-security platforms get their own section, because buyers usually evaluate them as part of a licensing or network decision.

The Best AI DLP Platforms at a Glance

ORION Security is the first choice here for enterprises that need AI data controls inside a broader DLP platform. Nightfall AI, Cyberhaven, MIND, and Forcepoint each cover AI data loss from a different starting point: SaaS and cloud detection, lineage, agent-run operations, and a policy-first suite.

RankPlatformBest forHow it describes its AI controls

1. ORION Security: Best Overall for AI Data Controls Inside Full DLP

ORION Security treats AI as another place data moves, so prompt and upload inspection sits inside the same detection and investigation model as endpoint, browser, SaaS, and email. Teams can monitor, warn, or block risky AI use where ORION Security has coverage, with the source of the data shown. It doesn't treat AI as a separate product.

The detection model evaluates three forms of context together: lineage, which explains where data came from and how it moved; classification, which determines what the data contains; and identity and environment, which assess whether the movement makes sense for that user, device, role, account, and destination. For supported AI workflows, ORION Security can distinguish personal from corporate accounts. Its public documentation lists coaching the user, preventing a paste, and blocking a prompt, so safe AI use continues while risky behavior is stopped.

Endpoint sensors cover Windows and macOS, a browser extension covers supported browsers and AI tools, and API connectors cover supported SaaS apps. Detection doesn't wait for a full policy library. Useful findings can appear from the first connected sources, and policies remain for deterministic requirements, approved exceptions, and the warnings and blocks users see.

Customer evidence. ORION Security reports roughly five percent false positives in its production customer materials. At one regional insurance brokerage, routine review takes approximately two hours a day from one team member, according to the customer's reported operating model.

What to test: Run tests 2, 4, and 6. Send the same file to a personal and a corporate account, trace its path from a SaaS app to the prompt, and have a reviewer sort a week of findings.

2. Nightfall AI: Best for SaaS and Cloud Detection

Nightfall AI brings detection built for SaaS and cloud data to AI use. Its platform page lists API integrations for apps such as Google Drive, Slack, Salesforce, Microsoft Teams, and GitHub, an AI security product covering employee AI use, agents, and MCP, and a use case for preventing data leakage to shadow AI. It also lists lightweight agents and browser plugins, with Mac and Windows named.

Customer experience. On G2, an anonymous enterprise reviewer in logistics and supply chain wrote on October 15, 2026 that AI control and monitoring "has been outstanding" since Nightfall added Claude inference hooks, and asked for better reporting and analyst triage. The same day, Wahyu N., a SOC lead at a mid-market company, reported false positives that needed detector and policy refinement. Both October reviews were incentivized and collected through seller invitations.

What to test: Run tests 1, 5, and 6. Check which AI paths need an agent or plugin, and how a reviewer triages a week of findings in the console. Don't skip the reporting check.

3. Cyberhaven: Best for Lineage-Led Investigation

Cyberhaven's homepage says it "discovers shadow AI, stops sensitive data from reaching prompts, uploads, and agents," and that it governs coding agents such as Claude Code and Cursor. It defines lineage as tracing data from its origin through every paste, copy, and rewrite, and it lists Windows, Mac, Linux, and VDI.

Customer experience. On G2, nic s., a security engineer at a mid-market company, wrote on June 10, 2024 that Cyberhaven can "continue to track where that data moves after an incident." The same reviewer described a learning curve when creating custom policies with multiple conditions, while saying established policies were easy to maintain.

What to test: Run tests 3 and 4. Check how much policy and dictionary design turns lineage into dependable enforcement for AI paths, and compare endpoint footprint on developer machines. It's the test that separates lineage from enforcement.

4. MIND: Best for Agent-Run Operations With GenAI Prompt Blocking

MIND's GenAI page describes blocking risky prompts in real time in tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot, and Gemini, enforcing policy for trusted GenAI tools, and blocking unknown or unapproved ones. Its homepage describes AI DLP agents that investigate, tune policies, and remediate, and lists SaaS, GenAI, agentic AI, endpoints, on-premise file shares, and email.

Evidence available. We didn't locate a customer review listing for MIND on G2 in the sources reviewed, so this section relies on its documentation. We don't repeat vendor-reported results. That's a gap worth raising with MIND directly.

What to test: Run tests 1 and 5. Check which prompt controls work in real time, which agent actions need human approval, and how the team reviews what the agents changed.

5. Forcepoint: Best for a Policy-First Suite With AI Controls

Forcepoint offers a mature policy-first DLP suite and has extended it to AI. Its AI usage page describes API connectors to Claude, ChatGPT, Microsoft 365 Copilot, and one AWS AI service for sanctioned platforms, endpoint detection of unsanctioned AI tools, and allow, restrict, or block decisions from a single inventory, all under the same policy model as its web, email, and endpoint controls.

Customer experience. On Gartner Peer Insights, an IT security and risk management associate at an IT services company wrote on June 2, 2026 that the policy engine is flexible, and that "out of the box, you can expect some noise." Another reviewer, at a banking company with $3 billion to $10 billion in revenue, wrote on April 12, 2026 about complexity deploying macOS agents through Jamf and incidents not always generating reliably. Those reviews cover the broader DLP product, not the AI features, so they don't settle how its AI controls perform.

What to test: Run tests 5 and 6. Check how much policy work AI controls need on top of the suite, and which AI workflows can be blocked in real time. Ask a reference customer what they'd change.

Where Microsoft Purview and Network-Security Platforms Fit in AI DLP

Microsoft Purview works inside the Microsoft licensing and compliance boundary, so test its native controls first, then add the context ORION Security brings through its integration. Network-security platforms control access to AI sites. Ask each how it understands the data behind a request.

Microsoft Purview

Microsoft's own deployment model for shadow AI combines Defender for Cloud Apps, Entra, Intune, and Purview, and it's a sensible baseline for a Microsoft-standardized company. Don't assume the boundary covers every AI tool your employees use. The gap to look for is data that moves outside it, through other SaaS apps, browsers, and AI tools.

Network-Security Platforms

Network-security platforms decide whether a site can be reached. Ask three questions of any of them. Does it see devices that aren't on the network? How does it treat a local action such as a paste or a screenshot? And does it know where the data came from, or only where the request is going?

How to Choose an AI DLP Platform

Choose by where your AI data risk is largest. Pick a platform that covers browser and desktop AI apps, tells approved accounts from personal ones, shows where the data came from, and offers controls matched to each workflow. Then run the six checks on two finalists with your own data.

ORION Security is the right choice if:

  • You want AI controls inside the same model as endpoint, browser, SaaS, and email, so one finding tells one story.
  • You want useful findings before a large policy library exists, with policies available when you need them.
  • Your security team is lean and needs findings that explain themselves.

Another platform fits if:

  • Following data lineage through every step is the center of your program, which is a focus of Cyberhaven.
  • Detection in SaaS and cloud apps leads your requirements, which is a focus of Nightfall AI.
  • You want agents running investigation and remediation, which is a focus of MIND.
  • You already run a policy-first suite and want AI controls added to it, which is Forcepoint's approach.

Whichever you shortlist, run the six tests on the same data and the same paths for every platform, so you're comparing like with like. Don't choose on the demo alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do AI DLP platforms work with ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini?

It depends on how the platform connects, and it's worth asking per tool. Browser and endpoint coverage handles web and desktop AI tools. API connectors handle sanctioned enterprise platforms. Ask each vendor for its supported-tool list by connection type, and test the tools your employees use.

Can DLP block pasting into a personal AI account?

Where the platform covers the channel and can tell a personal account from a corporate one, yes. Test it directly with check 2: use the same app, a personal and a corporate login, and the same test data, and compare what happens.

How is AI DLP different from a CASB or a secure web gateway?

A cloud access security broker (CASB) or secure web gateway controls whether an AI site can be reached. AI DLP evaluates the data moving into it, with its classification, source, and account. They work together, and neither one replaces the other.

Does DLP inspect AI responses as well as prompts?

Most platforms focus on what goes into AI tools: prompts, pastes, and uploads. Some vendors describe inspecting responses too. Ask for the supported scope by tool and test it with an example you care about.

How long does it take to deploy an AI DLP platform?

It depends on the channels you connect and how your devices are managed. Start with a pilot group, agree on the paths and success criteria first, and expand once the checks pass.

Do we have to block AI tools to stop data leaks?

No. Blanket blocking pushes use to personal devices and accounts where nothing's monitored. A better model allows approved use and stops the specific behavior that creates risk, such as customer data going into a personal account.
